We have had a leisurely start to our road trip. We have spent the last week at the Tilting Rock Lodge outside of South River, ON (C’s family cottage). We spent Saturday through Tuesday with Pauly and Eva, eating great food, hiking through the bush, and crafting. Most memorable moments:
· Making birch bark bread baking baskets (holy alliteration). These baskets are woven solely using untreated birch bark and the finished baskets can be used to bake bread in a conventional oven! This idea came from Bethany Olsen (a friend from Kingston). Eva and I (Court) wove 1 inch strips of birch bark into a loaf pan of sorts. Once we had the idea in our heads, we set to it and made it work! So cool. Brad and I made a second one after P&E left, and presently there are 2 loaves of freshly baked bread sitting on the kitchen counter. (And the cottage is still standing).
· Finding and dissecting an owl pellet (an owl pellet is the owl equivalent of a cat’s fur ball). We found small rodent bones wrapped tightly in a felting of fur. It was super cool and we have Aurora to thank for finding it! That long nose has to be good for something!
· Brad made a fireside oven out of galvanized sheet metal liberated from a dump-bound pickup truck. Last night we baked biscuits in the oven, this work like a charm! The simple “oven” heated up to 400°C. The biscuits were delish and we have cinnamon buns lined up for tomorrow night’s fire. We are also considering a fireside lasagna.
The truck is in full working order. Everything now has a home and things are lookin’ good! Brad has been slaving away and has commented on a particular absence of someone’s assistance. Not naming names, but someone has been doing more relaxing than someone else.
We are going to stay here until Sunday. Marty, Karen and Anne (Schreiter) are said to be arriving on Saturday so we’d like to get a visit in with them before we leave. Next stop is Sudbury Ontario to visit with another Kingston buddy, Jason.

Also, great photos! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat talking to you the other day, sister. Raquel and I miss you two something fierce. The bread looks great, and as always I am both impressed and emasculated by Brad's handywork. Stupid Brad and his stupid awesome fireside oven...
ReplyDeleteHey guys!
ReplyDeleteI hope that the trip is going well...sounds like it is! I'm really impressed with the bread baskets and reflector oven...those are going to come in handy! Can they be combined to make bread by the fire?
Anyways, sorry I wasn't able to get a hold of you before you left Stratford, but give an update soon!
